Friday 30th May 2008, a momentous day in more ways than one! Special guests, surprise guests, new and surprising solos. It's worth going to these events, just to keep up!
Our special guests for the evening were the Princesses of the Nile; Donna's babes from Westwoodside who delighted us with their Wings of Isis routine, and impressed us with their aplomb when the music didn't work and they had to wait to perform! While their music was on its way, Jacky (fresh from her appearance on Calendar the previous day) surprised us with a stick dance, including 2 sticks. Oh yes!
Our surprise guest for the evening was Eren Sinclair. The very Eren who taught many of us to dance, and is in some way responsible for the outbreak of self-confidence and self-expression currently taking place in our area. Most of the people currently teaching in Lincolnshire owe a debt of gratitude to Eren which we will only be able to repay by passing on the enthusiasm and skills we learned from her to our students. Eren is moving away shortly so this was our opportunity to say bye for now, as I'm sure she will be back to visit us, and remind us about heads not bobbing when the hips are dropping! We all signed a poster for her so she will remember us for as long as we will remember her. (Every time we Ticky!)
Anyway, back to the hafla now: Jacky's Doncaster students danced the new veil dance, and Two Sweet showed us their new routine. All Jacky's students danced the candle dance, on 3 levels this time. Fays students swished their way through Arabenco, (very stylish!) Wynne's students danced the original veil dance, and my students danced to Ya Salama with veils for their debut performance (well done ladies!) There was a bit of a Spanish theme going, all those veils and flamenco inspired music, as well as Donna with a Gypsy routine! It all goes to show how varied Bellydance is. The usually shy and retiring Siobhan amazed us all with her Khaleegi tabla routine! (And her lovely new costume.) We had a bit of belly-burlesque from Jacky and Hazel, a bit of saidi stick from me (dress down Friday!) some beledi from Jacky, as well as old favourites like Nour el Ain from Dans Satam, and new favourite Gel Askim. So much variety, no wonder we never get tired of it!
We all had a lovely time, it was great to see Eren again as well as all our friends old and new.
Next outing the Yellow Belly Bash on 14th June. See Mark for more details.
Then the Dans Satam fundraiser at Winterton on 27th June. I have a few tickets left….
