Dans Satam annual fundraising Hafla  Winterton 27th June 2008

Lovely weather, lovely venue, lovely people. What more could you want of a night out?

Winterton Rangers Supporters club is a great venue with a stage, large dance floor and enough space for everyone to move around freely. We invited Q’ar body art and Eqyptian Dancer souk (Karen Rastell) as we know they are both popular and reasonably local. The additional advantage of inviting Pauline and Asif is that they also bring along their drum circle to play for us, which they enjoy as much as we do. The loyal band of helpers, including Carol who Wynne and I met in Luxor last year, turned out to dress the hall, test the music and decide on the lighting. Rangers has several rooms off the main room, one of which we claimed as our hostesses dressing room, and our visiting artistes had the footballers changing rooms. Not as nasty as it sounds, the floors were dry this time, and they don’t play on Fridays so they were clean as well! Loads of space for changing in for once! Having done what we could prior to our guests arriving, we left. I had a plan for the rest of the day, which went for a burton when my son lost his front door key. Oh well, I tried!

By the time I got back lots and lots of people had arrived, Karen was setting up, and there was a queue for henna. We had a full programme, Fay, and her girls, Wynne, and her students, me, (my girls declined the chance) Siobhan, Karen, Pauline, Carol, and Dans Satam of course. Everyone danced beautifully and did themselves proud. Wynne worked hardest of all, not just with the organisation, but she also danced seven (count them 7) times! Our programme also included a very talented violinist, Alexandra, who played for Wynne as well as doing a set of her own. We had a raffle to raise some more cash, and the prizes included a bike as well as the usual bottles of wine. Ian Cawsey MP came along to say a few words and draw the raffle for us, and he seemed to be having a good time. We had a nice buffet, and only a few technical difficulties with the music. Some of my students trekked up and enjoyed the show as well as joining in with Ticky. The highlight of the evening for me (apart from my solo which went rather well) was the drumming; Asif, Pauline and Ginger did a set for us, and for a while I was the only one dancing! Not that I object to dancing by myself you understand, but it’s about time some other people took the plunge! It’s huge amounts of fun and very interactive. Pauline and Ginger joined me on the dance floor to give it a tribal twist, which was fun, and a few more people joined us.

I didn’t see as much of the dancing as I wanted to, or speak to as many people as I wanted to, but it was lovely to see so many people enjoying themselves and raising money for our chosen causes: breast cancer charities in the UK and Just Because, raising money for a mobile mammogram unit for Egypt. When we have the final figure, we’ll post it here and in the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

See you next time!

Trish
